Loktak Lake, the largest fresh water lake in North East is unique for the floating islands called 'Phumdis'. These small green patches that are visible in the photos are not the normal islands but are 'Phumdis' - mix of vegetation, soil and other organic matter in different stages of decay (not attached to the land below the lake). The huts that are visible are also built on a floating island. The largest 'phumdi' is so large and so hard that it houses the world's only floating national park - Keibul Lamjao National Park. The size of that floating mass is 40 square km and it is the home of many species of flora and fauna. 40 sq km of floating island !
