Dobara Chanti Bridge - Tehri Dam !

Go beyond Mussoorie and Nainital and explore the surreal beauty of Uttarakhand. At a distance of only about 80 km from Rishikesh, see some wonderful man made creations (aka temples of modern India) alongwith the breathtaking views of the hills and the river. See and admire India's tallest Dam (Tehri Dam), the vast expanse of the beautiful dam-made lake and the longest motorable suspension bridge in India (Dobra Chanti Bridge).

There are some inexpensive home stays and camping resorts which offer a wonderful view of the placid and beautiful lake (I stayed in 'Lake View Camp and Cottages'). For those looking for a unique experience, there is also an option of staying in the middle of the lake in the floating cottage (Le Roi floating buts and cottages).

Dobra-Chanti bridge :

The bridge that connects the villages of Dobra and Chanti comes as a boon for around 2 lakh residents of this region for whom the travelling time to go from Pratap Nagar to Tehri has drastically reduced from 5 hours to 1.5 hrs. After the old bridge that used to connect the towns got submerged in the lake, the commuters were forced to take a 100 km long detour. Due to persistent and justifiable demand of the residents the then CM ND Tiwari approved the project in 2006 (Besides the disgusting debauchery of the old man, his tenure also saw some development in the hills). The construction of the bridge was supposed to be completed by the year 2008 but due to inefficiency of the successive state govts, faulty design, choice of inefficient contractor, corruption and huge cost overruns, there was inordinate delay and bridge was finally open for pubic in March 2020.
